ABOUT US

OUR STORY

HALO Training was born from a desire to empower people to achieve their full potential in business and in life. Our experience was forged on the battlefields of Iraq, Afghanistan & other global conflicts. We have led people through the most adverse and uncertain environments where the pace is fast and the stakes are high.

OUR POINT OF DIFFERENCE

Traditional leadership training is failing. Spending hours in a classroom is only half the work. Leaders need an opportunity to practise applying their new skills. That’s why we engineer environments that teach you, test you and help you lead through tough times.

Tony Groves

Founder and Lead Trainer

Masters in Counter-Terrorism Studies – Graduate diploma in Strategic Leadership – 16 year military and intelligence career leading teams in Iraq, Afghanistan and contracted to the US Government in the Middle East.

While deployed overseas, Tony experienced many leadership styles from the stereotypical ‘drill sergeants’ who led through fear, to the more humble and confident leaders who led by inspiring their teams. Tony describes his own leadership style as ‘quiet and reflective’. Tony is passionate about growing better leaders in New Zealand and helping them to achieve their personal and professional goals through mental toughness, resilience building and strength of character. In his spare time, Tony enjoys functional fitness to stay well and spending time with his wife Maria and their daughter, Milan.

Darren Folau

Trainer

Darren’s professional working background spans 28 years as a Police Officer, primarily based in Counties-Manukau and Canterbury. Darren has enjoyed a varied career in a wide range of roles from frontline general duties policing and serious crime investigation. The majority of his career was spent in the Criminal Investigation Branch, where he specialised in diverse areas of Child Protection, National Security and Organised Crime.

He has travelled the Pacific region and the globe in coaching, investigating crime and peace keeping roles. Of his achievements, he will always remember fondly his role in the genesis of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) in 2003, where all Pacific nations worked in partnership, collaboratively to bring peace, security and stability back to the region.

In 2015 Darren was again deployed to the Solomon Islands mentoring the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force in the post RAMSI environment. During this deployment, Darren recognised the risk posed by a lack of organisational wellbeing and he designed and developed a complete health and wellness programme for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.

Personal, Community and Organisational wellbeing and development is now where Darren’s focus lies. Among accolades, Darren has been awarded a Queens Service Medal for services to New Zealand Police. He holds a Bachelor of Health Science degree.
